Colossians 1:28 (NRSV) “It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.”
2 Peter 3:18 (NASB) "Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
Nurture means to further the development or growth of an organism. The Apostle Paul instructs parents to raise their children "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Eph. 6:4 KJV). The English word "nurture" translates the Greek word paideia, meaning to educate, to train, or to instruct. For the purposes of the FISHING Evangelism Growth Strategy™, nurture is the on-going process of spiritual growth and maturation in the faith. We also call this discipleship training.
Discipleship training includes the church's Christian education and spiritual formation program. Discipleship training is all that the church does to help believers adopt a biblical world view and exhibit Christ-like behavior. As I said in other articles, the process of evangelism does not end at the sinners prayer or the baptistery. We are called to make disciples, not converts. Nurture turns converts into disciples committed to the lordship of Jesus Christ.
